How to photograph an event

A large portion of my business is made up of photographing events. I often work with the organisers and sponsors of London's biggest events and conferences at venues such as Billingsgate, Tobacco Dock and the Excel Centre. Whether it’s a relatively small event or hundreds of people, the most important thing about photographing a conference or event is to get images that reflect the buzz and atmosphere in the venue.

It is really important for me to consider each booking as individual but I will break down what I consider to be the most important elements of conference photography. 

Capturing photography of networking

Human interactions at events like this are a great way to get across the feeling of business networking, that is after all why so many people coming to corporate events. Some conferences are looking for a more formal workplace environment, so it's about shooting people at their laptops and engaging in a business environment in a classic corporate photographer style. Other briefs are far more interested in capturing casual social interactions, laughter, fun and people enjoying the conference, perhaps with a drink.

Event photography of branding

Clients and sponsors spend a lot of money on conferences, so taking clean dynamic images of their branding is very important. This may be banners, sponsor stands or name tags, we ensure that our photographers take time to capture the individual design elements that will showcase the work that has gone into a conference. 

Conference photography highlights

It’s really helpful as a conference photographer to have a running order for the day so that I know exactly where to be and when. Capturing keynote speakers, breakout sessions and workshops are key to showing what has gone into a conference. What I try to do with all our event photography is to create images that can not only be used to advertise next year but used in future marketing and PR campaigns.
